2017 Community Award Nominee

Every year, the Heritage Toronto Awards showcase extraordinary contributions to the conservation and promotion of Toronto’s heritage, made by individuals, groups and organizations.

The Midland Park Modernism Alliance was one of nine nominees for the Heritage Toronto 2017 Community Heritage Award.

The Midland Park community is nominated to become a Heritage Conservation District (HCD). The nomination is currently under review by the City of Toronto. If this designation is achieved, Midland Park will have the honourable distinction of becoming just the 2nd Mid-20th Century Modern HCD IN CANADA.

Why do we have HCDs in Toronto? "HCDs are maintained so that every Torontonian, present and future, can appreciate and take pride in the City’s rich cultural heritage". HCDs do not protect the colour of your front door... They serve to ensure that the character of a historically significant neighbourhood is protected.

Architect, Edward (Ted) Ross and his wife, Pamela. 1985.
Developer, Curran Hall and Architect, Edward Ross designed and built the Midland Park residential development in 1959.  It is one of the very few mid-century modern housing developments in Toronto.

Their winning designs created masterful synergy between living space, nature and design. John Race, Secretary / Treasurer of Curran Hall said, "We had good design and good design leads to better living, better community".

ART FEATURE "THE MAJESTIC TREE"
Trees are a key ingredient in the beauty of Midland Park. They complement a primary value in mid-century modern residential architecture; houses designed to "let the outdoors in". Consequently, Midland Park houses have a very close relationship with nature and the outdoors. Effectively, your backyard is an extension of your living space.

MID-20th CENTURY MODERN ARCHITECTURE

Mid-century modern architecture was employed in residential structures with the goal of bringing modernism into America's post-war suburbs. During the 40's - 60's, a time of economic growth and high spirits gave way to a progressive housing design era. The mid-century modern movement brought simple designs that rebelled against the excessive ornamentation of the Victorian style and a reaction to industrialization.

The Midland Park Modernism Alliance was founded in 2011. Our primary mandate is to be a resource with a mission for the documentation, preservation, and promotion of the mid-century modern houses of the Midland Park community. Our fundamental objective is to create awareness and build public appreciation and support for the distinctive historic character of this 1960s community.  A half century later, the world has a perspective to appreciate these houses as a product of their time and it is our motivation to share and celebrate these houses of the Atomic Age.
